Houseplant Festival Talk | IKEA Greenhouse Cabinet Building with Cabinet Cultures
Entrench yourself in the world of greenhouse cabinets with Cabinet Cultures curators Dr Giulia Carabelli and Matthew Beach.
In this workshop you will learn how to practice growing houseplants in ‘hacked’ IKEA display cases. By modifying these readymade display cases with weather-stripping, grow lights, wire shelving, backing boards, fans, and more, these objects take on new forms as interior greenhouses. Out of these hacking and planting practices emerges ‘cabinet cultures’: the way humans make relationships with houseplants at this unique meeting of care, technology, interior design, and living critters.

Dr Giulia Carabelli is Senior Lecturer in Social Theory and Director of the Environmental Futures programme at Queen Mary, UoL. Her research looks at how people make home with plants. You can follow her research on Instagram @careforplants. Matthew Beach is an artist-researcher and doctoral scholar at Queen Mary, UoL. Embedded within discourses around materiality, his practice explores the entanglements between place, the photographic, and care in more-than-human worlds. Together, alongside social media content creator Emma Angold and botanical illustrator and eco-conceptual artist Sarah Gardner, they produced the Cabinet Cultures exhibit at the Garden Museum during summer 2023.
