Constance Spry was a rulebreaker when it came to flower arranging, known for using unexpected plant materials in her designs – everything from blossom branches and berries to edible greens such as chard and kale.
To get you started on your #SpryStyle journey, we filmed Shane Connolly – floral designer extraordinaire and curator of our Constance Spry exhibition – making his own Spry-inspired arrangement using gorgeous seasonal blooms and foliage from his own garden, and explaining a bit about her seasonal, natural approach.
Now it’s your turn! Here’s what to do:
1. Go hunting in your garden, balcony, allotment or local flower shop – you don’t even have to use flowers, just grab whatever plant material you find beauty in!
2. Have fun making a #SpryStyle arrangement and post a photo on Instagram.
3. Tag us @gardenmuseum and #SpryStyle
At the end of the Spry exhibition (26 September), we’ll do a random draw from all the tagged entries and the winner will receive a year’s subscription to Gardens Illustrated, entry for two to the Garden Museum, and a lovely GM tote bag with a few goodies inside!
Follow the hashtag #SpryStyle for inspiration, here’s a few of our favourites so far:
