Beth Chatto OBE VMH
27th June 1923 – 13th May 2018
We are very sad to hear that Beth Chatto has passed away. She died at her home, at the age of 94. Her career as an acclaimed gardener, writer and plantswoman spanned six decades; for many, she was Britain’s most influential gardener, and included awards of ten successive Gold Medals at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and the highest award, the Victoria Medal of Honour.
Last year Beth Chatto’s archive of notebooks and diaries, correspondence and photographs, were deposited in our new Archive of Garden Design, and we are very proud to be custodians of her legacy.
In 2014 we commissioned Ben Dickey to create a film portrait of Beth Chatto at her gardens. This film was made possible with donations from The Pilgrim Trust and a private donor. We hope you will enjoy this glimpse of a great, and hugely loved, gardener.
